Rumsfeld 'helped Iraq get chemical weapons'

By WILLIAM LOWTHER, Daily Mail

US Defence Secretary
Donald Rumsfeld

US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld helped Saddam Hussein build up his arsenal of deadly chemical and biological weapons, it was revealed last night.

As an envoy from President Reagan 19 years ago, he had a secret meeting with the Iraqi dictator and arranged enormous military assistance for his war with Iran.

The CIA had already warned that Iraq was using chemical weapons almost daily. But Mr Rumsfeld, at the time a successful executive in the pharmaceutical industry, still made it possible for Saddam to buy supplies from American firms.

They included viruses such as anthrax and bubonic plague, according to the Washington Post.
The extraordinary details have come to light because thousands of State Department documents dealing with the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war have just been declassified and released under the Freedom of Information Act.

At the very least, it is highly embarrassing for 70-year-old Mr Rumsfeld, who is the most powerful and vocal of all the hawks surrounding President Bush.

He bitterly condemns Saddam as a ruthless and brutal monster and frequently backs up his words by citing the use of the very weapons which it now appears he helped to supply.
The question is: Why has he never said anything about his role in the negotiations?
'Donald Rumsfeld has some explaining to do,' a senior Pentagon official said last night, while Congressional sources said that a Senate Committee was considering opening hearings to investigate exactly what happened.

The documents could hardly have been released at a worse time for Mr Rumsfeld, who is building up troops in the Gulf in preparation for a war with Iraq that is generally expected to start in about a month.

They will also embarrass Tony Blair as he attempts to build international support for military action.
And they will cause a headache for the Foreign Office, because the news will be seen by Islamic countries as a prime example of American hypocrisy over the issue.

For years Middle Eastern countries have accused the US of double-talk over Iraq. They are bitterly critical that the American government helped arm Saddam during the 1980s in a war against Iran, which at that time Washington regarded as its biggest enemy in the region.

America's critics are now disgusted by the way the administration has performed a somersault, and now expects them to agree that Saddam's regime should be treated as a pariah.
This will make it even harder to persuade neighbouring states to offer Western troops bases and landing strips vital for such an onslaught.

But one thing was clear last night - President Bush will not let the embarrassment prevent him from forging ahead with his plans to attack Baghdad, and if that does happen Mr Blair will have no choice but to join him in the attack.

It was in late 1983 that Ronald Reagan made Mr Rumsfeld his envoy as the Iranians gained the upper hand in their war with Iraq.

Terrified that the Iranian Islamic revolution would spread through the Gulf and into Saudi Arabia - threatening US oil supplies - Mr Reagan sent Mr Rumsfeld to prop up Saddam and keep the Iranian militants within their own borders.

The State Department documents show that Mr Rumsfeld flew to Baghdad where he had a 90-minute meeting with Saddam followed by a much longer session with foreign minister Tariq Aziz.
'It was a horrible mistake,' former CIA military analyst Kenneth Pollack said last night.
'We were warning at the time that Hussein was a very nasty character. We were constantly fighting the State Department.'

On November 1, 1983, a full month before Mr Rumsfeld's visit to Baghdad, Secretary of State George Shultz was officially informed that the CIA had discovered Iraqi troops were resorting to 'almost daily use of chemical weapons' against the Iranians.
Nevertheless, Mr Rumsfeld arranged for the Iraqis to receive billions of pounds in loans to buy weapons and CIA Director William Casey used a Chilean front company to supply Iraq with cluster bombs.

According to the Washington Post, a Senate committee investigating the relationship between the US and Iraq discovered that in the mid-1980s - following the Rumsfeld visit - dozens of biological agents were shipped to Iraq under licence from the Commerce Department.
They included anthrax, subsequently identified by the Pentagon as a key component of the Iraqi biological warfare programme.

The newspaper says: 'The Commerce Department also approved the export of insecticides to Iraq, despite widespread suspicions that they were being used for chemical warfare.'
At the time of his meeting with Saddam, Mr Rumsfeld was working for Searle - a company which dealt only in medicinal pharmaceuticals.

Both he and Searle made all their money from the distribution of a cardiovascular drug.
Under no circumstances did he or Searle have any connection to the production of chemicals which would have been sold to Saddam.

And no one in the US has ever suggested that Mr Rumsfeld had any personal interest at stake in the Iraq meetings.

The Defence Secretary was making no comment last night.

2000: director of a company which wins $200m contract to sell nuclear reactors to North Korea 2002: declares North Korea a terrorist state, part of the axis of evil and a target for regime change

Donald Rumsfeld, the US defence secretary, sat on the board of a company which three years ago sold two light water nuclear reactors to North Korea - a country he now regards as part of the "axis of evil" and which has been targeted for regime change by Washington because of its efforts to build nuclear weapons.
Mr Rumsfeld was a non-executive director of ABB, a European engineering giant based in Zurich, when it won a $200m (£125m) contract to provide the design and key components for the reactors. The current defence secretary sat on the board from 1990 to 2001, earning $190,000 a year. He left to join the Bush administration.

The reactor deal was part of President Bill Clinton's policy of persuading the North Korean regime to positively engage with the west.

The sale of the nuclear technology was a high-profile contract. ABB's then chief executive, Goran Lindahl, visited North Korea in November 1999 to announce ABB's "wide-ranging, long-term cooperation agreement" with the communist government.

The company also opened an office in the country's capital, Pyongyang, and the deal was signed a year later in 2000. Despite this, Mr Rumsfeld's office said that the de fence secretary did not "recall it being brought before the board at any time".

In a statement to the American magazine Newsweek, his spokeswoman Victoria Clarke said that there "was no vote on this". A spokesman for ABB told the Guardian yesterday that "board members were informed about the project which would deliver systems and equipment for light water reactors".

Just months after Mr Rumsfeld took office, President George Bush ended the policy of engagement and negotiation pursued by Mr Clinton, saying he did not trust North Korea, and pulled the plug on diplomacy. Pyongyang warned that it would respond by building nuclear missiles. A review of American policy was announced and the bilateral confidence building steps, key to Mr Clinton's policy of detente, halted.

By January 2002, the Bush administration had placed North Korea in the "axis of evil" alongside Iraq and Iran. If there was any doubt about how the White House felt about North Korea this was dispelled by Mr Bush, who told the Washington Post last year: "I loathe [North Korea's leader] Kim Jong-il."

The success of campaigns in Afghanistan and Iraq have enhanced the status of Mr Rumsfeld in Washington. Two years after leaving ABB, Mr Rumsfeld now considers North Korea a "terrorist regime _ teetering on the verge of collapse" and which is on the verge of becoming a proliferator of nuclear weapons. During a bout of diplomatic activity over Christmas he warned that the US could fight two wars at once - a reference to the forthcoming conflict with Iraq. After Baghdad fell, Mr Rumsfeld said Pyongyang should draw the "appropriate lesson".

Critics of the administration's bellicose language on North Korea say that the problem was not that Mr Rumsfeld supported the Clinton-inspired diplomacy and the ABB deal but that he did not "speak up against it". "One could draw the conclusion that economic and personal interests took precedent over non-proliferation," said Steve LaMontagne, an analyst with the Centre for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation in Washington.

Many members of the Bush administration are on record as opposing Mr Clinton's plans, saying that weapons-grade nuclear material could be extracted from the type of light water reactors that ABB sold. Mr Rumsfeld's deputy, Paul Wolfowitz, and the state department's number two diplomat, Richard Armitage, both opposed the deal as did the Republican presidential candidate, Bob Dole, whose campaign Mr Rumsfeld ran and where he also acted as defence adviser.
One unnamed ABB board director told Fortune magazine that Mr Rumsfeld was involved in lobbying his hawkish friends on behalf of ABB.

The Clinton package sought to defuse tensions on the Ko rean peninsula by offering supplies of oil and new light water nuclear reactors in return for access by inspectors to Pyongyang's atomic facilities and a dismantling of its heavy water reactors which produce weapons grade plutonium. Light water reactors are known as "proliferation-resistant" but, in the words of one expert, they are not "proliferation-proof".

The type of reactors involved in the ABB deal produce plutonium which needs refining before it can be weaponised. One US congressman and critic of the North Korean regime described the reactors as "nuclear bomb factories".

North Korea expelled the inspectors last year and withdrew from the nuclear non-proliferation treaty in January at about the same time that the Bush administration authorised $3.5m to keep ABB's reactor project going.

North Korea is thought to have offered to scrap its nuclear facilities and missile pro gramme and to allow international nuclear inspectors into the country. But Pyongyang demanded that security guarantees and aid from the US must come first.
Mr Bush now insists that he will only negotiate a new deal with Pyongyang after the nuclear programme is scrapped. Washington believes that offering inducements would reward Pyongyang's "blackmail" and encourage other "rogue" states to develop weapons of mass destruction.

IS ISLAMIC SLAUGHTERING CRUEL TO ANIMALS?

By Dr. Aisha EI-Awady - 02/02/2003
Islam's stance on what is permissible to eat and what is not is clear.
There are strict rules when it comes to meat regarding what is allowed and what is forbidden. In Surat Al-Maida (The Table) Allah
says:
"Forbidden to you (for food) are: AI-Maytatah (the dead animals -cattle-beasts not slaughtered), blood, the flesh of swine and the meat of that which has been slaughtered as a sacrifice for others than Allah or has been slaughtered for idols etc, or on which Allah's Name has not been mentioned while slaughtering and that which has been killed by strangling or by a violent blow or by a headlong fall or by the goring of horns - and that which has been (partly) eaten by a wild animal - unless you are able to slaughter it(before its death) and that which is sacrificed (slaughtered) on AnNusub (stone altars). [Forbidden] also is to use arrows seeking luck or decision, [all] that is Fisqun (disobedience of Allah and sin). This day, those who disbelieved have given up all hope of your religion, so fear them not (but fear Me. This day, I have perfected your religion for you completed My Favor upon you and have chosen for you Islam as your religion. But as for him who is forced by severe hunger, with no inclination to sin [such can eat these above-mentioned
meats], then surely, Allah is All Forgiving, Most Merciful".

The Islamic practice of slaughtering animals by means of a sharp
cut to the front of the neck has frequently come under attack by
some animal rights activists as being a form of animal cruelty, the
claim being that it is a painful inhumane method of killing animals.
In the West, it is required by law to stun the animals with a shot to
the head before the slaughter, supposedly to render the animal
unconscious and to prevent it from reviving before it is killed so as
not to slow down the movement of the processing line. It is also
used to prevent the animal from feeling pain before it dies.

German Research Studies Pain
It therefore may come as a surprise to those who have made such
acclimations to learn of the results of a- study carried out by
Professor Wilhelm-Schulze and his colleague Dr. Hazim at the
School of Veterinary Medicine, Hannover University in Germany.
The study: 'Attempts to Objectify Pain and Consciousness in
Conventional (captive bolt pistol stunning) and Ritual (Halal, knife)
Methods of Slaughtering Sheep and Calves' concludes that Islamic
slaughtering is the most humane method of slaughter and that
captive bolt stunning, practiced in the West, causes severe pain to
the animal.

In the study, several electrodes were surgically implanted at various
points of the skull of all animals, touching the surface of the brain.
The animals were allowed to recover for several weeks. Some
animals were then slaughtered by making a swift, deep incision with
a sharp knife on the neck cutting the jugular veins and the carotid
arteries as well as the trachea and esophagus (Islamic method).
Other animals were stunned using a Captive Bolt Pistol (CBP).
During the experiment, an electroencephalograph (EEG) and an
electrocardiogram (ECG) recorded the condition of the brain and the
heart of all animals during the course of slaughter and stunning.
The results were as follows:

I - ISLAMIC METHOD
The first three seconds from the time of Islamic slaughter as
recorded on the EEG did not show any change from the graph
before slaughter, thus indicating that the animal did not feel any
pain during or immediately after the incision.
For the following 3 seconds, the EEG recorded a condition of deep
sleep - unconsciousness. This is due to the large quantity of blood
gushing out from the body.

After the above-mentioned 6 seconds, the EEG recorded zero level,
showing no feeling of pain at all.
As the brain message (EEG) dropped to zero level, the heart was
still pounding and the body convulsing vigorously (a reflex action of
the spinal cord) driving a maximum amount of blood from the body
thus resulting I in hygienic meat-for the consumer.

II - WESTERN METHOD BY C.B.P. STUNNING
The animals were apparently unconscious soon after stunning.
EEG showed severe pain immediately after stunning.
The hearts of animals stunned by C.B.P. stopped beating earlier as
compared to those of the animals slaughtered according to the
Islamic method resulting in the retention of more blood in the meat.
This in turn is unhygienic for the consumer.

Western-Style Slaughtering and Mad Cow's Disease
Not only is this method of stunning animals before the slaughter
severely painful as shown by the previous experiment, but there is
also a rising concern that this method may be a factor in the spread
of mad cow's disease from cattle to humans as it was discovered in
recent research carried out at Texas A&M University and by
Canada's Food Inspection Agency, that a method called pneumatic
stunning (which is the firing of a metal bolt into the cow's brain
followed by a pulverizing burst of 150 pounds of air pressure)
delivered a force so explosive that it scattered brain tissue
throughout the animal. This news is disturbing since the brain tissue
and spinal cord are the most infectious parts of an animal with mad
cow disease, which causes fatal Swiss cheese like holes in the brain
of the infected animal. It is more disturbing to find out that around
30 to 40 percent of American cattle are stunned by pneumatic guns.
Islamic Regulations for the Slaughter

As one can see from the previous studies, Islamic slaughtering of
animals is a blessing to both the animal and to humans alike. In
order for the slaughtering to be lawful, several measures must be
taken by the one performing the deed. This is to ensure the highest
benefit to both the animal and the consumer. In this regard, the
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "God calls for mercy
in everything, so be merciful when you kill and when you slaughter:
sharpen your blade to relieve its pain".

The object used to slaughter the animal should be sharp and used
swiftly. The swift cutting of vessels of the neck disconnects the flow
of blood to the nerves in the brain responsible for pain. Thus the
animal does not feel pain. The movements and withering that
happen to the animal after the cut is made are not due to pain, but
due to the contraction and relaxation of the muscles deficient in
blood. The prophet (peace be upon him) also taught Muslims
neither to sharpen the blade of the knife in front of the animal nor
to slaughter an animal in front of others of its own kind.

The cut should involve the windpipe (trachea), gullet (esophagus),
and the two jugular veins without cutting the spinal cord. This
method results in the rapid gush of blood draining most of it from
the animal's body. If the spinal cord is cut, the nerve fibers to the
heart might be damaged leading to cardiac arrest thus resulting in
stagnation of blood in the blood vessels. The blood must be drained
completely before the head is removed. This purifies the meat by
removing most of the blood that acts as a medium for
microorganisms; meat also remains fresh longer as compared to
other methods of slaughtering.

Therefore accusations of animal cruelty should very rightly be
focused on those who do not use the Islamic way of slaughtering
but prefer to use those methods which cause pain and agony to the
animal and could also very well cause harm to those consuming the
meat.
Halal Hysteria by Karima Hamdan

There has been a great deal of white noise regarding halal meat slaughter
bandied around in the media lately. The story usually revolves around
how halal (and by definition kosher...but this is hardly ever mentioned
with any vigour) is barbaric and cruel because the animal remains
"unstunned" until death, unlike modern slaughter techniques in which the
animal is stunned.

Sometimes this may be coupled with an exposé of some unlikely place;
like Wembley Stadium or Ascot Racecourse, serving halal meat on the
menu that permits the insinuation that it is all due to spineless Guardian
reading liberals who capitulated in accepting this mindless barbarism in an
idealistic desire to appear inclusive.

Whether it is articles like this Daily Mail story about a reporter who went
undercover to film a halal abattoir in Birmingham or Johann Hari writing
about "The religious excuse for barbarity" in The Independent, the literary
style is the same – an emotively written piece that resembles an airport
bookshop pot-boiler rather than a balanced piece of journalism. Bucket
loads of hyperbole about throats hacked open, screaming lambs and
spurting blood cover over the real science, with the only references being
to organisations openly against halal and kosher slaughter. And when
these cannot be found, Hari manages to quote some impressive sounding
facts without mention of the source or if they were validated observations
having been published in a peer reviewed scientific journal, leaving the
reader with the vague impression that some white-coated boffins have
agreed these facts and that the rhetoric presented is entirely factual.
So in truth these articles amount to nothing more than a hysterical scare
story and, to quote Shakespeare, are "a tale told by an idiot, full of sound
and fury, signifying nothing".

Leaving aside any references to what Muslims and Jews say about halal
and kosher slaughter (which has been dismissed by Johann Hari
as "pseudoscience: the intelligent design of animal welfare"), there is in
fact a significant body of independent scientific evidence that seems to
have been conveniently ignored which shows that at the very least the
alleged humaneness of stunning is a very grey issue indeed.
So that the readers of UmmahPulse do not fall foul of these scare tactics it
is important to clarify the real facts about stunning. In the UK today three
different methods are used according to the animal being slaughtered:
• The captive bolt pistol (used for cows/cattle)
• Electric stunning (used for sheep)
• Electrified water bath (used for poultry)

Captive Bolt Pistol Stunning
The captive bolt pistol, used widely in the UK's cattle abattoirs, gives the
animal a blow to the head causing percussive stunning without
penetrating the skin with unconsciousness resulting from direct brain
injury.

Concerns about this type of stunning reach as far back as 1974
when carried out at Hanover University in Germany by Professor Wilhelm
Schulze comparing EEG (brain wave) and ECG (heart beat) recordings
from cattle and calves slaughtered either by the modern "captive bolt
pistol stunning" method or traditional non-stunned halal slaughter with a
sharp knife were published[1].

The results demonstrated that non-stunned halal slaughtering was
associated with no evidence of pain from the time immediately after
slaughter until loss of consciousness several seconds after. Blood
continued to be pumped from the body after loss of consciousness due to
spinal reflexes. In contrast, animals that were first stunned with the
captive bolt pistol may have appeared unconscious but EEG readings
revealed readings consistent with pain perception.

This research was cited in the German Federal Constitutional Courts on
the 15th January 2002 when a previous ban on halal slaughter
was overturned. Furthermore, research carried out at the Texas A&M
University showed that captive bolt pistol stunning of animals prior to
slaughter in fact forced brain material into the blood stream which posed
a significant risk to the spread of BSE (Mad Cow Disease). This work has
been reproduced by a team at Bristol University in 1999[2].

It is interesting to note that although the US Department of Agriculture
(USDA) had banned the use of captive bolt pistol stunning since 2004 due
to the risk of BSE, the situation in the UK during this period was:
"... in the UK, despite the Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries and Food (MAFF
- now known as DEFRA) findings that the captive-bolt stun gun can indeed
help spread BSE, no similar ban to that of the USDA has been imposed.
The Farm Animal Welfare Council (FAWC) stated in a recent report (June
2003): 'The potential loss of this tool without a suitable substitute would
present a major animal welfare challenge.' They make no comment about
the challenge this presents to human welfare."
It is interesting to note the Farm Animal Welfare Council which refuses to
place the health risk that captive bolt pistol stunning poses to humans
above the alleged welfare of cattle has also been particularly vocal in its
opposition to halal slaughter.

Electrical Stunning in Sheep
The UK's Meat Hygiene Service found that whilst some abattoirs use
captive bolt pistol stunning on sheep, the majority of sheep slaughtered
are first shocked with electrical tongs delivering an approximate 1.2amp
shock. This technique also has its problems: A scientific paper published in
the British Veterinary Journal[3] in 1984 showed that there was a
significant problem with "mis-stuns" that only delivered a painful partial
shock rather than the usual full charge.

In addition there was also the issue of what actually occurs after the
sheep is stunned. Current scientific evidence suggests that insensibility to
pain occurs when brain wave activity "flatlines" (an isoelectric EEG
pattern). In halal slaughter it takes 13 seconds for sheep’s brains to
flatline and interestingly there is no actual change of the EEG patterns
during these 13 seconds compared to before the throat was cut, which
caused the author to postulate that the actual loss of the pain reaction
occurred within 4 seconds[1].

In contrast, the animal that is stunned before slaughter has EEG patterns
resembling a type of seizure that if it were to occur in humans is called a
"grand mal" epileptic seizure. This epileptic fit lasts for between 25-32
seconds, depending on the length of the initial electrical shock. The whole
premise of stunned slaughter is based around the idea that during an
epileptic fit the animal cannot feel pain, so rendering the slaughter
"humane" if it occurs during this seizure activity.
However, the average time between stunning and commencing the act of
slaughter is 21 seconds[3], and under UK law only one carotid artery
needs to be severed, in which case death occurs at about 70 seconds.
Hence, if the throat is cut within the average 21 seconds after stunning,
the sheep will regain consciousness for approximately 1 minute before it
bleeds to death – usually when it is hanging upside down waiting to be
skinned. It is rather sickening to note that because skinning usually starts
about 20 seconds after slaughter, there will be a significant number of
animals which will literally be skinned alive.
In comparing this with halal slaughter, where both carotid arteries and
both jugular veins have to be severed causing brain unresponsiveness
within 13 seconds (but is postulated to perhaps start at 4 seconds) -
which now is the most humane?

Whilst we are recovering from the mental image of a sheep being skinned
alive after recovering from its stun-induced epileptic fit we should ponder
on an even more basic question. Does the stun actually cause nonresponsiveness?
Research carried out at Bristol University showed that
whilst the electrical stun probably causes analgesia, the sheep will have
significant periods of responsiveness when it is aware of its surroundings
– and so it is not unconscious but probably spends the last minutes of life
experiencing extreme stress[5, 6]. Contrast this with halal slaughter
where our blessed Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) forbade that the
animal should be stressed in any way before the slaughter so that even
the knife should be hidden from view until the very last moment and that
we should "Fear God in the treatment of animals." (Abu Dawud)
Electrified Water Bath for Poultry

The preferred method of stun slaughtering poultry is by shackling their
legs and stunning by passing them head first, upside down through an
electrified water bath, before being passed through an automatic neck
cutter before entering a scalding tank. Leaving aside the obvious reaction
when hearing about how stun-slaughtered poultry spend their last
moments, there are several issues that need to be explored.
The first is the body of evidence that show the electrical water bath
doesn't actually stun the bird – sometimes because the bird moves its
head and so avoids the bath, sometimes due to the variation in weight,
fat content, amount of feathers, brain resistance, and sometimes due to
"under-stunning" where an abattoir decreases the voltage of the bath to
avoid the situation where the bird starts fitting so severely that it breaks
its bones[7].

Even if the bird does get the optimal electrical shock, the brain wave
pattern produced resembles that of a "petit mal" epileptic seizure in
humans which does not cause unconsciousness (low frequency poly-spike
EEG pattern)[7]. This practically means that if a bird is not unconscious
after the electrified water bath it will have its neck cut by a mechanical
knife whilst fully conscious.

An even more disturbing scenario is that some conscious birds also
manage to avoid the mechanical knife. Hence if they are not identified by
the slaughter-man acting as the system back-up (not an unusual
occurrence as in a typical abattoir he has 150 birds whizzing by him
upside down every minute), it will enter the scalding tank fully alive and
conscious.

Coupled with these issues are also the same issues as with sheep
stunning – namely the time it takes between the stunning and actual
slaughter. Needless to say there is significant research demonstrating that
around 10% of stunned birds will have regained consciousness when
entering the scalding tank due to the lag time between stunning and dying
due to only having one carotid artery severed[8].

In Conclusion
With such a body of scientific evidence lending weight to the fact that
stunning before slaughter is not humane, one wonders why it is that this
has not featured in the halal/kosher debate up until now. It is also
interesting to read the remarks of the non-Muslim scientists that
published some of these papers, with Professor Wilhelm Schulze
concluding back in the 1970s that:
"the Islamic way of slaughtering is the most humane method of slaughter
and that captive bolt stunning, practiced in the West, causes severe pain
to the animal."[1]
...and Dr Freeman Boyd concluding in his 1994 paper that:
"It is interesting to ask why, if this method of slaughter can render an
animal unconscious immediately, it is treated as an exemption to the
requirement of humane slaughter - that is, available only to those of
Jewish or Islamic faith? It can be argued that despite its status as an
exemption to humane slaughter, complete severance of the jugular veins
and carotid arteries is a humane method of slaughter for poultry, where
blood loss to the brain quickly results in loss of brain function."[7]
Where are these voices in the debate about halal? Unfortunately, they are
not heard. Instead, all we hear is the constant accusation that
halal/kosher slaughter is barbaric, with precious little scientific evidence
used to back up this claim. Anyone trying to raise their head above the
parapet risks putting their lives and the lives of their family into danger
as Sajjad Karim, a courageous Muslim MEP from Lancashire, has found
out when he received death threats for opposing new European
Parliament proposals for compulsory labelling of stun-free halal meat.
It is interesting that this is not the first time attempts have been made in
Europe to ban halal/kosher slaughter. It is sobering to note that one of
the first enactments of the Nazi Party in 1933 was a ban on kosher
slaughtering as they considered it barbaric and cruel as well. One of the
most poisonous Nazi propaganda films at the time Der ewige Jude (The
Eternal Jew) showed a complete distortion of kosher slaughter and instead
showed Jews torturing animals to death for their own pleasure.
Considering the current level of rhetoric about halal slaughter present in
the UK media I wonder how long it will be before the lies told about halal
slaughter are immortalised in film.

One fact that is made over and over again in papers is that halal and
kosher slaughter is medieval and should be replaced by modern
techniques. This to me demonstrates a truly sickening level of arrogance
on the part of papers like The Daily Mail and journalists like Johann Hari,
where they assume that they have achieved a more enlightened level of
morality and of concern for animal welfare by pushing a trolley absentmindedly
around Tesco compared with generation upon generation of
devoted Jewish and Muslim worshippers who until this last generation
would spend a great part of their everyday lives caring for, feeding and,
yes, slaughtering their animals.

As most UK Muslims have joined the ranks of those disconnected from the
food chain we all perhaps have lost sight of the most important fact in this
whole debate: these animals are not owned by the farmer, the abattoir,
the supermarket or the consumer but rather they are all Allah's creatures
that we have been given permission to use only if we obey Allah's laws
about how they are treated. We as individuals will be held accountable for
every one of our actions on The Day of Judgement including any
complicity in the mistreatment of animals due to the abandonment of
Allah’s laws because we were too embarrassed or too greedy to care or
too keen to join the politically-correct brigade. At the end of the day we
know that halal slaughter is the most humane way of killing an animal,
not due to a multitude of scientific papers but rather because we were told
by the One who created us and created them. He is the Most Merciful, the
Most Compassionate.

Islamic Way of Slaughtering Animals looks Cruel

Islamic Way of Slaughtering Animals looks Cruel

Dr. Zakir Naik

Dr. Zakir Naik

Q: Why do Muslims slaughter the animal in a cruel manner by torturing it and slowly and painfully killing it?
A: The Islamic method of slaughtering animals, known as ‘Zabiha’ has been the object of much criticism from a large number of people.
One may consider the following points, which prove that the Islamic method of ‘Zabiha’ is not only humane but also scientifically the best:

1. Islamic method of slaughtering animal

‘Zakkaytum’ is a verb derived from the root word ‘Zakaah’ (to purify). Its infinitive is ‘Tazkiyah’, which means purification. The Islamic mode of slaughtering an animal requires the following conditions to be met:

a. The animal should be slaughtered with a sharp object (knife)

The animal has to be slaughtered with a sharp object (knife) and in a fast way so that the pain of slaughter is minimised.

b. Cut wind pipe, throat and vessels of neck

‘Zabiha’ is an Arabic word which means ‘slaughtered’. The ‘slaughtering’ is to be done by cutting the throat, windpipe and the blood vessels in the neck causing the animal’s death, but without cutting the spinal cord.

c. Blood should be drained

The blood has to be drained completely before the head is removed. The purpose is to drain out most of the blood, which would otherwise serve as a good culture medium for micro organisms. Hence, for this purpose, the spinal cord must not be cut, otherwise the nerve fibers to the heart would be damaged during the process causing cardiac arrest, resulting in stagnation of the blood in the blood vessels.

2. Blood is a good medium for germs and bacteria

Blood is a good medium for germs, bacteria, toxins, etc. Therefore the Muslim way of slaughtering is more hygienic as most of the blood containing germs, bacteria, toxins, etc. that are the cause of several diseases are eliminated.

3. Meat remains fresh for a longer time

Meat slaughtered by Islamic way remains fresh for a longer time due to deficiency of blood in the meat as compared to other methods of slaughtering.

4. Animal does not feel pain

The swift cutting of vessels of the neck disconnects the flow of blood to the nerve of the brain responsible for pain. Thus the animal does not feel pain. While dying, the animal appears to struggle, writhe, shake and kick, not due to pain, but due to the contraction and relaxation of the muscles deficient in blood and due to the flow of blood out of the body.

Non-Vegetarian Food makes Muslim Violent !

Q: Science tells us that whatever one eats has an effect on one’s behaviour. Why does then Islam allow Muslims to eat non-vegetarian food, since eating of animals could make a person violent?
A: 1. Only eating of herbivorous animals is allowed by Islam. I agree that, what a person eats has an effect on his behaviour. This is one of the reasons why Islam prohibits the eating of carnivorous animals like lions, tigers, leopards, etc. who are violent and ferocious. The consumption of the meat of such animals would probably make a person violent and ferocious. Islam only allows the eating of herbivorous animals like goats, cattle, sheep, etc. that are peaceful and docile. We Muslims eat peaceful and docile animals because we are peace loving and non-violent people.

2. The Qur’an says Prophet prohibits what is bad

The Qur’an says: “The Prophet commands them what is just and prohibits what is evil. He allows them as lawful what is good (and pure) and prohibits them what is bad (and impure),” [Al-A’raf 7: 157]
“So take what the Messenger assigns to you and deny yourselves that which he withholds from you.” [Al-Hashr 59: 7]
For a Muslim, the Prophet’s statement is sufficient to convince him that Allah does not wish humans to eat some kinds of meat while allowing some other kinds.

3. Hadith prohibiting eating of carnivorous animals

According to various authentic Ahaadith narrated in Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim including hadith narrated by Ibn Abbas in Sahih Muslim, Book of hunting and slaughter, Hadith No. 4752 and Sunan Ibn-i-Majah chapter 13 Hadith no. 3232 to 3234, the Holy Prophet (Pbuh) prohibited the eating of:

(i) Wild animals with canine teeth, i.e. meat eating carnivorous animals. These are animals belonging to the cat families such as lions, tigers, cats, dogs, wolfs, hyenas, etc.

(ii) Certain rodents like mice, rats, rabbits with claws, etc.

(iii) Certain reptiles like snakes, alligators, etc.

(iv) Birds of prey with talons or claws, like vultures, eagle, crows, owl, etc.

Richard O’Dwyer will not be extradited to the US

The family of Babar Ahmad responded to today's news that Richard
O’Dwyer will not be extradited to the US:

"We strongly welcome the news that Richard O’Dwyer will not be
extradited to the US for conduct which is not illegal in this country.
No British citizen should be extradited to a foreign jurisdiction for
conduct committed in the UK which is not considered unlawful."

“We are delighted for Richard and his courageous mother Julia who
has worked day and night to stop her son and others, including Babar,
from being extradited to the US. We just feel sorry that it took such
a long period of anxiety on the family before common sense
prevailed.”

Notes to Editors:

1. Babar Ahmad was extradited on 5 October 2012, having been detained
without trial since August 2004 following an extradition request from
the US. He is currently being detained in pre-trial 23 hour solitary
confinement. His trial is scheduled to take place in October 2013. A
complete timeline of Babar Ahmad’s case from the moment he was
arrested on 2 December 2003 can be viewed at
http://www.freebabarahmad.com/the-story/timeline.

2. On 24 September 2012, the European Court of Human Rights rejected
Babar Ahmad’s request for appeal against extradition to be referred
to the Grand Chamber, ruling that there would be no violation of his
rights if he were to be extradited to the United States.

3. On 5 October 2012, the High Court refused Babar Ahmad’s
application for permission to judicially review the Director of Public
Prosecution’s decision not to prosecute him in the UK. He was flown
to Connecticut, USA within hours. He is currently being held in
solitary confinement in US custody as he awaits trial tentatively
scheduled for October 2013.

4. The DPP made his initial decision not to prosecute Babar Ahmad in
July 2004 stating that there was insufficient evidence to prosecute
him in the UK. On 22 November 2011, the Crown Prosecution Service
admitted for the first time that it had never actually reviewed the
bulk of the material seized from Babar Ahmad’s home, it having been
withheld from the CPS and transferred by the Metropolitan police to
their American counterparts.

5. In March 2012 and June 2012, detailed representations were made to
the DPP in relation to the case to prosecute Babar Ahmad in the UK in
light of the developing prosecutorial policy of the DPP, supported by
reference to the material that the police had sent to the US. On 7
September 2012, British businessman Karl Watkin sought the DPP’s
permission to privately prosecute Babar Ahmad in the UK and submitted
a bundle of evidence to the DPP including signed statements by Babar
Ahmad of his involvement with the websites in question.

6. On 1 October 2012, the DPP refused to give permission to Mr Watkin
to prosecute Babar Ahmad and further stated that on reviewing the
material submitted in March 2012 and June 2012, there remained
“insufficient evidence” to sustain a realistic prospect of
conviction to warrant prosecution.

7. In 2005, District Judge Timothy Workman, then the most senior
extradition judge in the UK, said about Babar Ahmad's case. "This is a
difficult and troubling case. The defendant is a British Citizen who
is alleged to have committed offences which if the evidence were
available, could have been prosecuted in this country."

8. A full parliamentary debate on urgently reforming British
extradition laws took place on 5 December 2011 with the motion being
passed without a vote. The debate came as a result of an e-petition to
put Babar Ahmad on trial in the UK securing almost 150,000 signatures
within 3 months. The e-petition can be viewed at
http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/885 .

9. On 22 June 2011, the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Human Rights
explicitly raised concerns over Babar Ahmad's case in its report in
'The Human Rights Implications of U.K extradition policy' and
recommended that the government urgently re-negotiate the UK- US
extradition of individuals in Babar Ahmad's position.

10. During his arrest in London in 2003, Babar Ahmad sustained over 73
injuries. In March 2009, the Metropolitan Police admitted carrying out
this abuse and paid him £60,000 compensation. Four police officers
later stood trial over this attack but were found not guilty.

Take 5 before 5

Take 5 before 5
         ........................................
Take Advantage of Five Before Five by Yasir Birjas

The Prophet sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam has been blessed with jawaami' ul kalim, the most concise, or precise, speech. The Prophet sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam said, "I have been blessed with concise speech." Therefore, when we look at the precious pearls that came out of the Prophet’s mouth, sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam, we find that many of his ahadith are in fact treasure chests of wisdom. The words might be small, but the meanings behind them are great. The speech might be succinct, but the benefits and the blessings that can be derived from them are innumerable.

And of the ahadith that are jawaami', or comprehensive in nature, is the hadith of ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhu reported in the mustadrak of Al-Haakim, musnad Imam Ahmad, and others, with an authentic chain of narration. In this hadith the Prophet sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam said to a man while he was advising him:
"Take advantage of five matters before five other matters: your youth, before you become old; and your health, before you fall sick; and your richness, before you become poor; and your free time before you become busy; and your life, before your death."

The first word, ightanam comes from same root that signifies sheep -ghanam. Sheep, in Arabic, means ghanam, and ightanam is from the same root that also signifies sheep. What exactly is the meaning of ightanam? Ightanam is used to indicate any good that can be obtained without much effort. Just like sheep, they can easily be caught if they go astray. This is why the war booty that is found on the battlefield after the army has fled is called ghaneemah. It is easy to take, just like the sheep. You can grasp it without much effort. Ghaneemah, ightanam, and ghanam are all from the same root.

So it is as if the Prophet sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam is pointing out that these five matters are very easy to obtain. They are easy to prey on and catch, and very simple to benefit from. That is because they are treasures that everyone possesses but few people appreciate.

What are these five things?
#1: Take Advantage of Your Youth Before Your Old Age

The Prophet sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam started off and said shabbab or shab, a youth or young person. The Prophet sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam said, "Take advantage of your youth before your haram.” And the word haram means old age, maybe even senility. It is an age in which the person does not have the power or mental faculties that he had while he was a youth.

Youthfulness is a time when a person is the most energetic, when he lays out the foundations for his future, and when he plans his life. So the Prophet sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam said to take advantage of this time before the time comes when you do not have that enthusiasm, when you do not have that zeal, or that outlook. The enthusiasm and energy that you have been blessed with will never again be given to you after this age. Therefore, the Prophet sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam said to seize the moment and take advantage of it. A person should exercise this energy for the sake of Allah by procuring knowledge of Allah, obtaining halal sustenance, and worshipping Allah through acts that he might not be able to do later on in life.
Youth here does not mean the western concept of youth that youthfulness finishes when someone is eighteen or nineteen years old. In the Islamic Shari’ah, a man's life has been divided into a number of sectors or stages. Shabbab or shab, according to the strongest opinion, means before reaching the age of forty. This is because forty is the prime of life, when mental and physical capabilities have reached a peak, and after that they start to go down.

The Prophet sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam said:
"Seven are the people that will be sheltered on the Day of Judgment, the day in which there is no shade except the shade of Allah subhaanahu wa ta ‘aala.”
One of the seven people, the Prophet sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam mentioned was a youth who grew up in the worship of Allah subhaanahu wa ta ‘aala. Remember, the youth is up to forty. So this young person, whether he is twenty or thirty or right before reaching the age of forty, he has grown up and has been raised or has raised himself busy in the worship of Allah subhaanahu wa ta ‘aala.
Likewise, the Prophet sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam said in an authentic hadith that Allah subhaanahu wa ta ‘aala is pleased with and amazed at the youth who does not have any evil inclinations. This means he does not do evil. Allah subhaanahu wa ta ‘aala loves such a youth who is straight in the worship of Allah and does not turn left or right to the paths of Shaytaan. Allah loves this person and is amazed at him because in general it is the youth, due to their virility and strong desires, who swerve left and right away from the path of the worship of Allah subhaanahu wa ta ‘aala. So this is the first of the five: “your youth before your old age.”

#2: Take Advantage of Your Health, Before You Fall Sick

The second of the five matters is, "your health, before you fall sick." The fact that one lives a normal life and is not afflicted with diseases and plagues, represents a person’s health. Take advantage of this before diseases and plagues come because mankind, being mankind, will fall sick. Everyone falls sick. If we did not fall sick, we would not be humans, we would be divine.
There will come a time when we will fall sick. Some of those times the sicknesses will be more severe, and for certain people even more severe. So the Prophet sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam is reminding us that we do not know when we will have full possession of our faculties, of our strength, of our mental powers, before we will fall sick. Therefore, take advantage of it before that time comes.

The Prophet sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam said:
"There are two blessings the majority of mankind have been deceived concerning." The majority of mankind do not appreciate these two blessings. They are "health," good health, "and free time."
Once a person came to Yunus ibn 'Ubayy, one of the scholars of the Salaf, and he complained of extreme poverty as he had not been blessed with much. Yunus ibn Ubayy asked him, "Would you be willing to give away your sight for a certain amount of money?" The man said, "No, of course not." Then he asked him, "Would you be willing to give your hands away?" He said, "No, of course not." He asked, "Your feet?" He said, "Of course not." When he finished he said "I see that you have hundreds of thousands of millions of blessings, yet you are complaining of poverty?"

We have our full faculties, we can see and hear. Look at someone who Allah subhaanahu wa ta ‘aala has tested with blindness. It is a very severe test, and that is why the Prophet sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam has said in an authentic hadith:
"There are two things if Allah subhaanahu wa ta ‘aala takes them away from a person and he is patient, he is guaranteed Jannah. These two things are the two eyes."
In other words, if a person is blind, and we seek Allah's refuge from the physical and the spiritual blindness in this world and in the hereafter, then Allah subhaanahu wa ta ‘aala is testing him. And if he is patient, then Allah will reward him with Jannah.

How about one who has been blessed not just with eyesight, but with hearing, health, arms, limbs, energy, vitality, enthusiasm, and many other things. Should we not appreciate the blessing from Allah subhaanahu wa ta ‘aala? Do we not realize how sweet health is? It can be used for the worship of Allah. When we are blessed with these bodies, why do we not use them in the worship of Allah?
The least we can do, brothers and sisters, is the faraa'id (obligatory actions) such as salah five times a day, fasting in Ramadan, and going for the Hajj. All of these require that we use our physical bodies. That is the least that we can do, the bare minimum. Of course, the more that one does, the better it is for him.
This is the second of the five matters: “your health before you fall sick.”

#3: Take Advantage of Your Richness Before Poverty

The third is, "your richness, before poverty." One day we might not have anything, and the next we might have much more than we need. One day, a person might have the best of jobs and the largest of salaries, yet, the next day, something happens and he does not have that job anymore and loses his source of income. So the wise person uses his richness before he becomes poor. He invests for his future.
As for the investments of this dunya, then the kafir and the Muslim are both the same; they both do that. Even the Prophet sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam would store staple food items even up to a year. Sometimes he would store barley and grain for a whole year for his family. So this is obviously something halaal as the Prophet sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam himself did it, and we should do it too. We should make sure we have enough money for our family and our children and ourselves, so we are not poor and we are not beggars. There is no doubt that this is a part of our Shari’ah as well.

But while we are doing this, let us not forget that we also need to invest for the Akhirah. Should we not think about investing this money so we can pick it and pluck it in the Hereafter when we need it far more than we need it in this world? We need to invest for the real future, our real life after our death.
The Prophet sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam once asked his companions, "Who amongst you loves his inheritors' money more than his own money?"

The meaning of this hadith is that the Prophet sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam is asking for example, does the father love the money of his son or does he love his own money? Of course, the father loves his own money. Likewise, every person will love his own money more than he loves the money of other people.
The Sahabah said, "Yaa RasulAllah, all of us love our own money more than we love the money of our inheritors. We all love our own money. We guard it and protect it more than the money of our inheritors.”
Then the Prophet sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam said, "Verily, the money that you spend in charity is your money, and the money that you leave behind is the money of your inheritors."

Ponder over that hadith for a while, how true it is. As for the father who loves his own money more than the money of his son, does he not realize that one day his son will take that very money of his and he will have nothing to do with it? All that is left of his money is what he spent during his life for the sake of Allah, if there was any such money. Any of it spent in charity for the sake of Allah, is money that will be yours permanently. The Arabic word for charity includes zakah, sadaqah, waqf, and any type of monetary good that you did. Everything besides this will go into the hands of your inheritors.

Remember that feeding your family is an ibaadah if you are doing it for the sake of Allah. If you are doing it for the sake of Allah, you will be rewarded. The Prophet sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam said that, "A morsel of food," one morsel of food, one handful of food, "if you put it in your wife's mouth, this will be a reward for you on the Day of Judgment." Now everybody, Muslim or non-Muslim, feeds his family. But will everybody be rewarded for that? No. Because only the one who does it remembering Allah, thinking about Allah, and doing it for the sake of Allah will be rewarded.

Ask yourself if the last time you went shopping, Allah was in your mind? Did you think of doing this for Allah? When you picked up the milk and the bread, was your heart thinking, "Oh Allah, I am buying this food through halaal money, and this is halaal food, because I want to feed my family and this is an obligation that You have put upon me, therefore, I am doing it for your sake." Who amongst us has this in his mind?
When we say, "That is spent for the sake of Allah," we are not just talking about money, zakah, sadaqah, and charity. Of course, giving in charity is the best thing you can do with your money. But do not forget that the majority of income that we spend, and in fact for the mu'min, all of the income that he spends, can be for the sake of Allah as well. This means thinking of Allah, spending for the sake of Allah, and having the intention of pleasing Allah subhaanahu wa ta ‘aala.
This is the third of the five things: “your richness, before poverty.”

#4: Take Advantage of Your Free Time Before You Become Busy

This is yet another great treasure that every single one of us possesses. Every single one of us must use our free time before we become busy. How much free time do we have and what do we waste it on? Think about it. Think about how much free time all of us have been blessed with. We have hours and hours every day and they go by. What do we waste it on? Primarily, in this country at least, television. It is also wasted on gossip and socialization of which there is no benefit whatsoever, in this world nor the hereafter.
Remember the hadith of the Prophet sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam that we just quoted about the two blessings (health and free time) most people have been deceived by. In other words, they don't realize their blessings of health and free time. You may have to work eight hours a day, no problem. Allah subhaanahu wa ta ‘aala has allowed this for you. He has obligated it upon you. When you come home, you have four or five hours, so spend them wisely for the sake of Allah.

Spending time wisely does not necessarily mean purely religious deeds. But spending your time wisely and even be something in this world. Learn a trade. Learn something that can benefit you in this world and that can benefit other people as well. Islam is a complete way of life, a complete code. Do not forget that all of the acts a mu'min does can be transformed into acts of worship if, and only if, he does them for the sake of Allah subhaanahu wa ta ‘aala.

Of course that there are religious deeds which are the best deeds to do. Every one of us should recite the Qur'an everyday, even if it's only for five or ten minutes. You should have some relationship with the Qur'an. Every one of us should pray some extra prayers as well, a few sunnahs or the nafls, if not the continual sunnahs that the Prophet sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam used to pray. This is the most important thing for us to do. But at the same time, do not forget that there can be many acts that can be rewarded if you change your niyyah and do them for the sake of Allah.

Do not waste your time. The greatest waster of time is the television. You turn it on, and an hour or two go by, and not only have you not gained anything for the Akhirah, you have not gained anything for this world. You have literally killed, murdered your time, and done absolutely nothing with it. And realize that you are lucky if you don't come away from those two hours without any sin. How many are the sins that are in television, with music, and the women, and other things. In my opinion, it is better for a mu'min not to even have this instrument in his house because of the evil that comes from it. Like Allah says about alcohol, the evil that comes from it is more than the good that is obtained from it.

When you have some free time, take advantage of it. The greatest thing that we can do in this free time is to worship Allah. And one of the greatest acts of worship is to seek knowledge. Take a book out to read, listen to some cassettes, or listen to some CD's. Do whatever you can do to increase your 'ilm. Attend some classes or even visit one another for the sake of Allah subhaanahu wa ta ‘aala. Visit your Muslim brother with the proper Islamic etiquette and adab. This is an act you can do that will pass your time away, and be worthwhile.

This is the fourth of the five matters: "take advantage of your free time before you become busy."

#5: Take Advantage of Your Life Before Your Death

This one phrase summarizes it all: "take advantage of your life before your death." Every one of us has a life. That is why we are here right now. Every one of us without a doubt will die. Allah says:
You are going to die and they too are going to die.

And it is as Allah said, the Prophet sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam passed away and so did the people that opposed him and believed in him. They all have passed away. And the turn came for those after them, and then those after them, until it is our turn.

The Prophet sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam therefore reminded us, "Take advantage of your life before your death." This is the greatest of foresight. Hence the Prophet sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam concluded the hadith with this phrase.

How are we going to use this life before death comes? As for the kafir, he will totally waste it because he will make this life his goal. He will live only to appease and satisfy every desire of his. Then on the Day of Judgment, he will beg Allah to send him back to this life. Allah describes this in the Quran:
When death comes to them, he will say, “O my Lord!”

All of a sudden, when his Lord comes to him he remembers Allah. Whereas throughout all of the years that he lived, Allah was nowhere near him; Allah subhaanahu wa ta ‘aala was the furthest thing from his death. On the Day of Judgment when he is resurrected, he will say:

Oh my Lord! Allow me to go back so that I may do good in the time that I had left.
Allah obviously will say, "Kalla” – no. You have only been allowed one life and you will not be able to go back and change that life. For every good you do you will be rewarded, and for every evil you do you will be punished.

Allah subhaanahu wa ta ‘aala also describes them in the Qur’an as saying on the Day of Judgment:
O our Lord, we have seen and we have heard. Let us go back to do good deeds; we are now believers.
They claim to believe in Allah and the Day of Judgment but Allah will not allow this to happen because everyone has only one life. That is what Allah has given and this is what we must make the best of in this world so that we are compensated accordingly in the Hereafter.

These are the five things that the Prophet sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam told the man to do. He advised him:
"Take advantage of five matters before five others: your youth, before your old age; and your health before you fall sick; and your wealth before you become poor; and your free time before you become busy; and your life before your death."

This hadith deals with responsibility, wisdom, foresight, long-term planning, and good strategy. Every one of us has been blessed with these five blessings. There is no one amongst us who has not been blessed with these five things. So how do we utilize them? What do we utilize them for? Why do we utilize them?
The wise person is the one who strives to achieve the pleasure of Allah subhaanahu wa ta ‘aala and then expects the best from Allah. The wise one is one who tries to arrive at the goal and then has tawakkul in Allah. Tawakkul does not mean to sit back and say, "Oh, this will happen to me." Rather, you must strive for it. The fool is the one who follows his desires and then presumes that Allah subhaanahu wa ta ‘aala will reward him.

We ask that Allah subhaanahu wa ta ‘aala makes us amongst those who can ightallim, those who can seize these five things, who can take advantage of them before the five will come. These five matters will inevitably be taken away from us, and substituted by the others that the Prophet sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam mentioned.

Wa aakhiru da'waana 'anil hamdulillahi Rab al 'Alameen, wa subhanak Allahumma wa bihamdika wa ash hadu'an laa ilaaha illa ant nastaghfiruka wa atubu ilayk.
